The History/Background of Kosovo
For the long time in Kosovan history they were controlled by the Serbian empire. Serbia took control of Kosovo in the 12th century, during the reign of the Nemanjic Dynasty. In the late 1600’s Kosovo defends against an Australian attack, ending it in a victory for the Kosovan people. In the early 1900’s, 1912 to be exact Serbia regained control of Kosovo from the Turks. During WWII Italy invaded and gained control over Kosovo and held control for all of the war. After the defeat of Germany and Italy in WWII, Kosovo was handed off to the Yugoslav federation. In 1981 the Kosovan people riot, forcing troops to try and gain control of separatist. Slobodan begins to rise in power and rallies a crowd of Kosovan people that help protesting against the harassment of the Albanian community. Slobodan begins to strip rights from the Autonomy laid down in the 1974 constitution. Following events of this Albania declares independence from Serbia, The Kosovan government dissolved rapidly after this occurred. In 1990 hundreds of thousands of people were sacked ranging from government employees to media workers. In 1991 many other countries declared independence and broke away from the Yugoslavia control some of which were Slovenia, Croatia, and Bosnia. In early to mid 1992 a war broke out in the Balkans swallowing up Kosovo in the midst making Kosovo and surrounding countries join the war. Later in 1992 Academic Ibrahim was elected president of the self righteous and self proclaimed republic. Throughout most of the 1990’s Kosovo had extreme ethnic tension, causing armed unrest to escalate at an extremely alarming rate. In late 1990’s To be exact 1998 Conflict became more open between Serbian police and Kosovo’s KLA, Serbian forces launch an extremely brutal crackdown Most civilians are driven out of their homes from the effect of this conflict
Kosovo's Refugee Problem
Ending of April 1999 ~600,000 citizens became refugees, later on 400,000 were displaced inside Kosovo. Making about half of their population refugees. About a 1/4th of the refguee’s moved south to Albania about 1/8th of the refugee chose to migrate to Macedonia. The rest moved to Montenegro and Bosnia as their place of home. As the left Serbs took everything from them ranging from, Their legal documentation to physical properties.
NATO later bombed the Serbian military to try and fend off an Ethnic cleansing(like the holocaust with the germs). The effect of NATO’s bombing caused the Serbs to up their aggressiveness on the Kosovan people, The Serb’s main goals to driven the Kosovars out of Kosovo. But NATO wasn’t having any of that, the won and let the Kosovars return to Kosovo Peacefully
