Syria’s problem
Syria has been in a civil war for more than four years now. It started in 2011 when Pro-democracy protests began when some teenagers vandalized a school wall with revolutionary slogans and were arrested and tortured. After security forces killed several on the scene more joined in on the protests. Many blamed President Assad and began to protest for his resignation. Security forces were forced to take out these protestors. This resulted in Syrian’s defending themselves with their own guns and fighting back. This civil war has escalated and fighting has now reached the capital of Syria, Damascus. More than 250,000 have died throughout the 4 and a half year period of this deadly war. More than 4.5 million people have fled from Syria since the start of the war. People have now taken refuge in neighboring countries, Lebanon, Jordan, and Turkey. All of which are struggling with the mass of emigrants from Syria. About 10% have found refuge in Europe. Organizations like the UN refugee agency help refugees rebuild their lives with the donations. About Syria
Syria is located in the Middle East, bordering the Mediterranean Sea, between Lebanon and Turkey, and is not much bigger than Pennsylvania. Syria is led by President Assad. Syria's top religions are Muslim, Christianity, Druze, and Jewish. The main language spoken in Syria is Arabic. Syria is mainly desert with weather being hot and dry in the summer and cold with snow or sleet in the winter. Syria's natural resources are petroleum, phosphate, asphalt, iron ore, and rock salt. Natural hazards in Syria are dust storms, and sand storms due to the desert land. Syria has had much conflict in the past years. In 1920 Syria was put under a French mandate. Two years later Syria was divided into three autonomous regions by the French. This led to uprisings and finally Syria's independence in April of 1946. Hundreds of thousands of Syrians are dying of the current civil war that begun in 2011, and the major infectious disease, Aids. The effects of both these problems are many Syrians seeking refuge.
